Tavern

A hotel or establishment that serves alcohol and bar meals: I'm going to Tavern at lunch for a drink- do you want to come?

Contributor's comments: Also used in Queensland. I understand the term has (or had) legal significance in the licensing laws: unlike a hotel (which must offer accommodation), a tavern is required to serve meals.

Contributor's comments: Tavern is usually shortened to "tav" - for example, the uni tav at UWA.
