jandals

Same as thongs, flip-flops. Rubber footwear. Believed to be used very widely in NZ and has come to Australia with the kiwis: Don't forget to wear your jandals on the hot sand.

Contributor's comments: This was a trade name derived from two words, Japanese Sandal. The person who stared making these got the idea when he visited the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.

Contributor's comments: This word was not used when I was growing up in WA and I have only ever heard it used by my New Zealand cousins. Subsequently have heard it used by NZ nationals - perhaps it is now being adopted in my home state.

Contributor's comments: Not used in Brisbane.

Contributor's comments: Pretty sure this is a Kiwi term, probably cropping up in Sydney so often because about half of New Zealand is there. :)

Contributor's comments: I've lived in Dunedin, NZ since 1946, and always heard only "jandals". Only in recent years has "thongs" turned up here, but still very rare.
