kylie

A boomerang or a similarly shaped object cut from thin guage metal such as a paint tin lid to throw at fish in shallow waters as an alternative to spearing: I didn't catch a thing with my rod, but the kids got plenty of fish with their kylies. Also, kylee. [from the Aboriginal language Nyungar (south-western WA)]

Contributor's comments: A device used for catching fish. I assume it comes from an aboriginal word: "I took my kylies down to the river and threw them at a school of fish."

Contributor's comments: The word kylie is used extensively in WA hospitals to decribe a blue cloth incontinence undersheet . I have never heard it used in 14 years of nursing in Qld.

Contributor's comments: a device made from flat tin to throw at fish in shalow water like a ninja star!

Contributor's comments: We made a kylie by folding a piece of tin approx ten inches long and 1.1/2in wide into a right angle and used it to throw at fish in the shallows. Every now and again we would accidently hit one! This was when I was a kid in Busselton in the 1950s. "Let's go and kylie some fish."
